It occurs as a result of sweat glands working more than normal. Although it mostly occurs during adolescence, it can also start from childhood. Excessive sweating is a condition that can cause social restriction that affects the quality of life of the person.
Regional excessive sweating occurs only in certain areas such as the hands, feet or armpits and is often familial, but it can rarely develop after neurological diseases.
They are usually the first treatment option in local excessive sweating, but their effects are limited, especially in hand and foot sweating. Since they contain aluminum salts, there is a risk of irritation in case of humidity in the applied area. At the beginning of the treatment, it is recommended to apply every night, but after the response is obtained, the application frequency is gradually reduced.
The sweating area is kept in water-filled special devices, which are given a very light electric current, for certain periods. There may be a slight tingling sensation and itching during the procedure. After the treatment, redness, swelling and small blisters may occur in the rarely treated areas. The limiting features of the treatment are that the treatment starts in the hospital first and requires long-term treatment, and then the need to switch to home-type devices.
Botulinum toxin applications are the application of the toxin obtained from the bacteria in the form of injection to the areas with sweating. This application, which is highly effective, can be applied to the armpits, palms and soles of the feet. Prior topical anesthesia applications are often sufficient, and rarely nerve block anesthesia or mild sedation can be applied. This effective method, which has a short processing time, should be repeated at 6-month intervals.
Although the success rates of surgical methods are very high, they should be preferred in people with severe excessive sweating unresponsive to other treatments due to the risks of significant complications and increased sweating that may occur in areas other than the areas where post-surgical treatment is applied.
